Halong Bay

HaLong Bay is a perennial travel spot in Quang Ninh province in northern Vietnam, located approximately 105 miles east of Hanoi in the Tonkin Gulf. This bay site is well-known for its breathtaking ocean limestone landscape and is widely acclaimed as one of Vietnam’s most scenic natural wonders. Halong Bay features more than 2,000 limestone karsts and thousands more of limestone monolithic isles spread along the 74-mile coastline of Bai Chay Beach. The weather of Halong Bay, like every other place in Vietnam, is tropical with two main seasons: cold/rainy and dry/hot. The temperature may vary from 59° to 77°F.

What Makes Halong Bay Truly Special?

The rich natural topography of Halong Bay has created diverse ecosystems which include oceanic, seashore and tropical green bio-systems. Travelers may find themselves amid spectacular coral reefs, unspoiled freshwater swamp forests, dense mangrove forests, sparkling water lakes and stunning white-sand beaches. Halong Bay is also a natural preserve of 60 endemic faunal species and 14 endemic floral species. With its aesthetic value and immense conglomeration of wildlife, it’s worthy for Halong Bay to be authenticated by the Vietnam Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism as a ‘Renowned National Landscape Monument and later declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

History and Legend of Halong Bay

The real meaning of the name Halong is “Bay of Descending Dragons”. The Vietnamese legend states that in the ancient times, the locals had to defend themselves from invaders when Vietnam was just beginning to develop into a nation. In order to aid the locals, dragons came from the heavens to protect them. The dragons spitted jewels and jade which turned into a multitude of islands and islets that linked together and formed a natural fortress against the invaders. After the locals were saved, the dragons decided to live in the bay. The name Halong was given to the very spot where the mother dragon descended and settled. Today, visitors can explore caves and grottos which have unified chambers inside along with hidden lakes and splendid limestone formations.
